FAIR Principles of Research Data

On May 20, the Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont (ICP) formalized an agreement with the Consorci de Serveis Universitaris de Catalunya (CSUC) and the Institució CERCA to actively participate in the Research Data Repository (RDR) managed by the CSUC. With this alliance, the ICP incorporates into its open science strategy a service for publishing, preserving, and disseminating empirical and numerical data generated by its researchers.

Through this agreement, the CSUC provides the ICP with access to a robust and scalable technical infrastructure, designed to ensure the medium- and long-term preservation of datasets, as well as the necessary security standards to guarantee their integrity and confidentiality when applicable. In addition, a continuous support and guidance program is established, with training sessions and technical advice to facilitate the upload, description, and export of data following the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable).

The ICP's involvement in the repository also includes collaboration in the development of common policies and protocols among CERCA centers, aiming to promote best practices in data management and to coordinate outreach activities that increase the visibility of the research carried out in Catalonia. Furthermore, the agreement includes a mutual commitment to work towards obtaining international quality recognitions, such as the CoreTrustSeal certification, and to adapt to new requirements from funders and evaluation agencies that increasingly demand transparency and data reuse.

For the ICP, this agreement represents a significant step forward in its policy of making research results accessible and strengthening cooperation with other institutes and universities. The platform will not only enhance the global visibility of studies and projects developed at the ICP, but also help save resources by sharing infrastructure and knowledge in data management.

The agreement has an initial duration of four years, renewable for equivalent periods, and takes a flexible approach that will allow for technological improvements and adaptation to new challenges in digital research. This agreement reaffirms the commitment of the ICP, the CSUC, and the CERCA Institution to open science, while preventing illegitimate use in line with the principle "as open as possible, as closed as necessary."

The published datasets will be available through the Portal de la Recerca de Catalunya (PRC). For several years now, the ICP has been using various CSUC services, such as the PRC (through which it publishes its scientific output) and CORA.eINA for data management plan development and management.
