A study published today in Scientific Reports by researchers at the Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont (ICP) reveals that competition between species would have been the cause behind the pathological dinosaur eggs that have been recovered in several sites of southwestern Europe. Female titanosaurs would have retained eggs in the oviduct for a long period of time, causing changes in the process of shell formation.

Research Program

My research focuses on understanding the patterns and processes of macroevolution using the fossil record. I am interested in the origin and diversification of new groups of organisms, particularly major vertebrate radiations such as birds, duck-billed and horned dinosaurs. Areas of research include the following:

  • The origin of novel characters and how these relate to the raise and diversification of ‘successful’ clades of organisms
  • Characterization of the tempo and modalities (e.g. early fast vs. slower but sustained expansion) of clade diversification through deep time
  • How factors extrinsic to the biology of organisms (such as geological events) influence the evolution and geographical distribution of vertebrate faunas
  • How morphological anatomical variation relates to taxonomic diversity and life history

These questions are approached by integrating comparative anatomy (including traditional character analysis and the quantification of shape variation through geometric morphometrics), phylogenetic inference and systematics, quantitative historical biogeography, and macroevolutionary analysis of biodiversity patterns through time. I use dinosaurs as a research model because of their long (160 million year) temporal range, widespread geographical distribution, high diversity, and the possession of unique anatomical structures.

Teaching

Albert has served as instructor for a variety of courses, including various macroevolutionary subjects at the Master’s level (University of Bristol, Bristol, UK) and Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy and Histology to senior undergraduate students (Florida State University, Tallahassee, USA)

Fieldwork

The search and excavation of vertebrate fossils, mostly non-avian dinosaurs, has taken Albert to conduct fieldwork in Mesozoic strata from Europe, North and South America. He has conducted fieldwork in the Lower Cretaceous lake deposits with dinosaur footprints of La Rioja (Spain), the lithographic limestones of Barremian (Lower Cretaceous) age in Lleida province (Spain), the late Maastrichtian strata of the south-central Pyrenean Basin in Spain, the Campano-Maastrichtian beds of the Allen Formation in Patagonia (Río Negro province, Argentina), the Judith River Formation near Malta (Montana, USA), the late Maastrichtian deposits of the Hell Creek Formation (eastern Montana, USA), and the Early Cretaceous exposures of the Yucca Formation in the Quitman Mountains (Hudspeth County, southwestern Texas, USA).

One of the tracks analyzed in this research (Novella Razzolini / ICP)

The analysis of a dinosaur trackway from the Barranco de la Canal (La Rioja) site reveals an injury in the left foot of an ornithopod dinosaur. The animal performed an abnormal gait probably due to the pain caused by the pathology. The investigation was led by researchers at the ‘Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont’ (ICP) and published in the journal Cretaceous Research.

Author of 76 technical papers mainly about Vertebrate Palaeontology and in particular
dinosaurs, pterosaurs, marine reptiles and palaeoichnology. He also published about 100
divulgative papers and books on palaeontological and geological matter.
Author of scientifical projects and texts of several exhibitions on geological and
palaeontological matter.
He is a palaeontological consultant for the Museo Friulano di Storia Naturale (Udine, Italy)
and the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Trieste.
His main scientific interst regards the terrestrial ecosystems of the European Archipelago
during the Cretaceous, with focus on the hadrosauroid dinosaurs, and the evolution of the
earliest (Triassic) pterosaurs.
He joined the ICP this year (2009).
