The fossil was found in Cala d'Estellencs (Mallorca) several years ago. However, with the use of new techniques, researchers have determined that it is 247 million years old. With this dating, the fossil specimen of the new species Protoanisolarva juarezi is now considered to be the oldest fossilized mosquito in the world, even predating the first known dinosaurs. The discovery has been published in the journal Papers in Palaeontology.
