Alba Vicente

‘Beatriu de Pinós’ Researcher
Paleoecology and Biocronology Research Group

Specialist in fossil charophytes from the Lower Cretaceous to the Neogene, particularly from the continental basins of the Iberian Peninsula and northern Mexico. She earned her doctorate at the Universitat de Barcelona and shortly after joined the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) as a postdoctoral researcher. Her affiliation with the Instituto de Geología of UNAM marked the beginning of a new line of research on fossil charophytes in Mexico and enabled her to initiate collaborations with Mexican researchers as well as with other countries in America, such as Peru. Her work focuses primarily on the taxonomic, paleoecological, biostratigraphic, and paleogeographic study of these aquatic macrophytes.

After three and a half years at UNAM, she joined the Centro Interdisciplinario de Ciencias Marinas (CICIMAR) of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) as a postdoctoral researcher associated with the project “¿Está sucediendo una sexta extinción masiva en los océanos?”, where she worked for over two years on the evaluation and modeling of marine extinctions over the last 540 million years to understand the current biotic crisis.

She has a total of 19 indexed publications, 5 peer-reviewed publications, and a popular science book published by Paidós (Planeta). She has presented over 30 conference abstracts and given numerous talks at both academic and outreach levels. She has served as a reviewer for journals such as Cretaceous Research, Historical Biology, Journal of Systematic Palaeontology, Papers in Palaeontology, and Review of Palaeobotany and Palynology, among others. Her achievements led to her admission to the Sistema Nacional de Investigadores e Investigadoras of Mexico, where she has been a member (SNII‑I) since 2019.

She is currently part of the research team at the Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont through a “Beatriu de Pinós” (AGAUR) postdoctoral fellowship. Her project focuses on the study of the Miocene charophyte flora of the Vallès‑Penedès basin, aiming to understand their biostratigraphic and paleoecological evolution and responses to climatic changes during that period.

How the Ampelomeryx grew: Discovering the life history of this relative of giraffes that lived in the Penedès

28 April 2026

A research team from the Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont (ICP-CERCA) has led the paleohistological study of Ampelomeryx ginsburgi, a giraffomorph ruminant from the Middle Miocene recovered at the Els Casots site (Penedès). Through microscopic analysis of bone tissues,...
