Postdoctoral researcher
She holds a degree in Biology (2011) and a master’s degree in Biodiversity (2012) by the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, as well as a PhD in Biodiversity by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (2018). She did her PhD studies at the Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont (2014 – 2018) with an FPI contract from the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. Afterwards, she received a postdoctoral research fellowship to work at the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Cape Town (South Africa, 2019 – 2021).
Her research focuses on the histological study of different groups of mammals, with a special emphasis on horses, zebras and their extinct relatives. In extant species, she microscopically analyses their hard tissues (bones and teeth) to correlate different features (e.g., tissue type) with key life history traits (e.g., growth rate). In extinct species, she uses hard tissue histology to reconstruct their life history strategy, and therefore to shed light on their palaeobiology, palaeoecology and evolution.
Her research has been published in prestigious journals (e.g., Scientific Reports, PLoS ONE) and presented in international and national meetings (e.g., EAVP). She has received funding from several Spanish (e.g., Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness), European (e.g., European Comission) and South African (e.g., Centre of Excellence in Palaeosciences) R&D agencies and institutions. She has also participated in scientific and academic committees, R&D projects, and outreach and teaching activities.
